Why you should read Retire Retirement
Tamara Erickson contends that “lucky boomers” are blessed with rewarding work opportunities as they age. As businesses have to search harder for skilled employees, she reports, boomers will be able to write their own tickets in the workplace. Well, maybe some of them. Erickson seems out of touch with those older workers who have been forced out of steady jobs and into tough retirements due to mergers, downsizing and hard times, and who are now earning minimum wage serving French fries or offering up shopping carts. Instead, she optimistically suggests a buffet of potential career-extension options for boomers who, she maintains, have the potential to come down on the sunny side of semiretirement. getAbstract appreciates her basic premise that the sky’s the limit regarding work options for many fortunate boomers, and acknowledges her thorough reporting on their choices. Erickson would deserve extra kudos if she had recognized the challenges as well as the opportunities facing soon-to-retire workers, but if you’re a professional, executive or successful entrepreneur who is approaching the traditional retirement age, she will give you some new ideas about how to plan for the next 30 years or so.
