Why you should read Through the Labyrinth

Women in the workplace face a difficult set of rules, explain Alice H. Eagly and Linda L. Carli. They must conquer more stringent criteria to get promoted and overcome a tricky “double bind”: If women are too assertive or “agentic,” people may not like them; if women are too supportive or “communal,” others may see them as too weak to lead. The authors advise a blended approach, and advise women to build social networks and seek a balance between work and home. Chapter nine offers particularly good coverage of how organizations often undermine women as leaders, and of how companies can change and, thereby, benefit. The book delivers solid information, though its distinct perspective may sometimes read as advocacy as well as science. getAbstract believes that women seeking career growth will find valuable counsel here.
