Gary Shapiro, CEO and vice chairman of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) and CES, the world’s largest technology trade show, argues that companies — and individuals — who want to thrive amid rapid change must know how to pivot: intentionally changing direction to stay innovative. In this engaging text, Shapiro draws on a wealth of real-world examples to explore how to navigate the four main types of pivots companies and their leaders face. Whether you need to pivot point today or want insights into emerging tech, Shapiro shows you how to adopt a proactive approach to your business’s future.

Summary

Pivots, or intentional changes in direction, allow businesses to remain resilient.

Pivots — intentionally changing direction — help businesses remain resilient and innovative in today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving business environment, rife with emerging risks like extreme weather and trade wars. For example, during COVID-19, CES, an in-person event regularly attended by over 100,000 people, pivoted to a digital event despite backlash, layoffs, and a $300 million loss for the potential host city, Las Vegas. Although risky, this change in direction paid off. By partnering with Microsoft Teams, CES 2021 managed to host 1,000 virtual exhibits, attract 150,000 online attendees, and win a Gold 100 Award for best digital event.

Companies pivot for many reasons — including in response to policy changes and shifting consumer trends — and in various ways — including diversification, rebranding, and early adoption of new technologies. There are four primary pivot types: “start-up” pivots, “forced” pivots, “failure” pivots, and “success” pivots.

Successful tech companies pivot toward what works.
