Revenge of the Tipping Point

Overstories, Superspreaders, and the Rise of Social Engineering

Outbreaks

by David Meyer

Journalist Malcolm Gladwell expands upon his 2000 bestseller The Tipping Point and discusses how social and viral outbreaks occur.

In this sequel to his 2000 bestseller, The Tipping Point, journalist Malcolm Gladwell explains how minor local variations, superspreaders, monocultures, and tipping points drive social epidemics.

Social Epidemics

In the 1970s, the United States experienced a resurgence in bank robberies. In Los Angeles, for example, the West Hill Gang robbed a Wells Fargo Bank of $437,000. Regrettably, leaders at the bank shared this number with the media, and the resulting publicity sparked a full-on revival of bank robberies reminiscent of the old West – at least, in LA.
