Up Was Never for Everyone!

Move up or move out. When those two options appear to be the only ones, dissatisfaction grows and engagement suffers. In decades of studying careers around the globe, Beverly Kaye, Lindy Williams, and Lynn Cowart have found that, in fact, there are more options. And rethinking career mobility can lead you to them!

The authors show how managers, coaches, and employees can partner to determine what’s best and what’s next. Keep the same job but discover new ways to learn and grow? Explore moving to a position that could be a better fit? Step back without getting derailed? This book encourages readers to take a “kaleidoscope” view—to be open to ever-shifting patterns of opportunities and possibilities—so they can create a unique, personalized path to a truly rewarding career.

In today's rapidly changing workplacethat is more global, multi-generational, dispersed and mobile than ever before, how we once viewed and discussed Career Mobility is no longer 'good enough' toensure long term success.  What we areexperiencing is more like Career DisrUPtion; not just for the employee, butequally for the leader and the organization.  What was once a ladder is now a lattice; and ahealthy career is likened to a kaleidoscope - one subtle shift and the entirelens changes in ways we previously could not have scripted.  Since its original publication in 1982, 'Upis Not the Only Way' has been a cornerstone for Career DevelopmentPractitioners, but even more importantly, it has become a mantra for all who coach, counsel, lead and execute career development strategies in this ever-evolvingenvironment.  This new edition highlightsand emphasizes how and why multiple growth options and experiences are nolonger a 'nicety', but rather a 'necessity' for those looking to successfully growthe individual as well as the organization. 'Up is Still Not the OnlyWay'  promises to 'master the mindset' onthose possibilities with provocative questions, unvarnished truths and breakthroughthinking, to foster new conversations around mobility and development.

Up Is Not the Only Way honors the individual in every one of us who is decidedly not cut from the same cloth as everyone else, and whose sense of work, career, job or vocation is best fueled by their unique potential. Lively, friendly and insightful, this book empowers you to strike out in career directions, and to take career pathways, that are in synch with who you are -- not who you have been told you must be. I was most moved by what I found to be the underlying theme of the book -- liberation. In short, Up is Not the Only Way gives you permission to be yourself in the ever-more complex world of work we all occupy.

This is a book for everyone: whether you are seeking sound and proven career advice, or whether you manage teams and people, this book is packed with gems. I especially like the "Mobility Mindset" feature, which gives specific examples of what other people and companies have done. The book is organized into six chapters. Each chapter elaborates on a career move: lateral, exploratory, enrichment, realignment, relocation and vertical. The last chapter of the book (Go For It) shows how to take concrete next steps. The book is a fast read, and easy to random-access based on need and interest.

Thank you, Bev, for another no-nonsense book with practical advice that helps managers and employees get more out of their jobs. In my interviews for The Compromise Trap, I found people were most satisfied in their careers when they kept their own score and defined success according to their values and desired experiences. Up is Not the Only Way provides very specific ways individuals can stretch and grow -- even in their existing roles -- and companies can create environments that are engaging and rewarding. An important read for any manager!

I do career assessments with individuals. This book is perfect for those working who feel stuck, uninspired, or ready for something new. It is full of useful questions. The authors suggest that you evaluate your skills, interests and values to help determine a direction. I use card sorts and worksheets to help identify these. We look for patterns which the authors recommend.

It's possible that we will spend 100,000 hours working during our lifetime this book points out. It identifies some trends affecting careers today such as mobility, ownershift and having an orb chart instead of an organizational chart. Work may tend to be more project-based so employees join projects.

The book asks an important question (questions are at the end of each chapter, too): "Money aside, what motivates you?" Another question the book suggests asking others you work with: "What talent do you have that I may not be aware of, that you would like to use more?"

On page 31 six career experiences are enumerated - which of these have been a part of your journey so far they recommend thinking about:

* GROW HERE ~ enrichment

* TRY BEFORE YOU BUY ~ exploratory

* SIDEWAYS TO HIGHWAYS ~ lateral moves

* STEP BACK FOR A REASON OR A SEASON ~ realignment

* WHEN UP IS THE WAY ~ vertical career move

* IS THAT GRASS REALLY GREENER ~ relocation

I thought that the questions suggested for information interviews were helpful: What do you need to know to hit the ground running in this role? What are the top five must-have skills for success? What does the future look like for your work? For the area? What best prepared you for this role?

This book is short, and distills a lot of wisdom and perspective in 116 pages. It's a good catalyst for thought for someone who is currently unhappy in their career, but doesn't know where to turn. This books offers ideas on possible directions. It may be a five-star read for someone who is looking for an impetus to make some exploratory steps in different directions.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
"Up is not the only way" covers the various ways of looking at a job, once one has become confident he wants some sort of change. The book then begins to analyze the six career options that everyone has--enrichment (learning additional skills on the job, in order to know more), exploration (trying out someone else's job, job shadowing, etc.), moving laterally (moving to another job that's basically similar to the one you're doing right now or which involves similar skills), realignment (taking a step down from your job to something less demanding), relocation (leaving your job) or vertically moving (getting a promotion).

The advice was pretty common sense, with lots of word in bolds, diagrams, and an overall feel of a workshop pamphlet or a class textbook. The font was rather big, and the material was very digestible. I think the issues that many are having isn't necessarily knowing the options, but being able to utilize them, which often depends a lot on the circumstances and people outside of themselves, such as their supervisor, the companies they apply to and their expectations, etc. Most often it's not about what the employee wants, but about what the company wants. I do agree with the authors that the once-prominent ladder leading up is no longer as visible, and the new landscape can quickly turn into one of stagnation. This book is about avoiding stagnation and helping the employee see all their options, but as it is, I think it's rather basic.

Reviewed in India on September 22, 2017
This book is for anyone who wants to continue to enjoy a rich fulfilling career for a long time. It will help you take charge in this VUCA world and stay relevant in these changing times. I found some practical tips that are useful for all the key stakeholders in careers – employees, managers and organizations. Really enjoyed reading the ‘Mobility moments’ full of real life anecdotes that I could connect to. The Kaleidoscope leitmotif is a colorful reminder to continue to look at options. All in all, if you are serious about engaging your employees or about your own career, it may be worth the investment.
