Purchase options and add-ons
Move up or move out. When those two options appear to be the only ones, dissatisfaction grows and engagement suffers. In decades of studying careers around the globe, Beverly Kaye, Lindy Williams, and Lynn Cowart have found that, in fact, there are more options. And rethinking career mobility can lead you to them!
The authors show how managers, coaches, and employees can partner to determine what’s best and what’s next. Keep the same job but discover new ways to learn and grow? Explore moving to a position that could be a better fit? Step back without getting derailed? This book encourages readers to take a “kaleidoscope” view—to be open to ever-shifting patterns of opportunities and possibilities—so they can create a unique, personalized path to a truly rewarding career.

About the authors
Dr. Beverly Kaye is recognized internationally as one of the most knowledgeable and practical professionals in the areas of career development, employee engagement and retention. In 2018 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Association for Talent Development (ATD) and the Thought Leader Award from The Association of Learning Providers (ISA). Beverly’s books include Love ‘Em or Lose ‘Em, Help Them Grow or Watch Them Go, Hello Stay Interviews, Goodbye Talent Loss and Up is Not the Only Way
Lynn Cowart was born in Buffalo, New York into an Italian and Polish family, growing up in the steel city of Lackawanna. After graduating from SUNY Buffalo with a BA in Business Communications, she traveled to Stamford, Connecticut to begin her career with GE Capital, where she later earned her MBA from the University of Connecticut. After a 20 year career with GE, between Capital and Aerospace in Valley Forge, PA., she 'retired' to Atlanta, Georgia to raise her two children and to begin her consulting adventure. Her first book, 'Up is Not the Only Way - Rethinking Career Mobility' co-authored with Dr. Beverly Kaye and Lindy Williams, is a how-to guide, ironically mirroring her own career, that re-defines growth and illustrates the benefits of optionality and kaleidoscope thinking in making smart, successful career decisions. Up is Not the Only Way delivers choices and options that all can apply, at some point in their careers, to ensure ultimate career satisfaction.
After 25 years inside the corporate world I stepped out to join the ranks of consultants, designers and independent contractors. The experiences have been amazing. I have learned and laughed and struggled and triumphed and so much more. Careers happen - planned or not! Why not do some planning then sprinkle in a heavy dose of adventure?

It's possible that we will spend 100,000 hours working during our lifetime this book points out. It identifies some trends affecting careers today such as mobility, ownershift and having an orb chart instead of an organizational chart. Work may tend to be more project-based so employees join projects.
The book asks an important question (questions are at the end of each chapter, too): "Money aside, what motivates you?" Another question the book suggests asking others you work with: "What talent do you have that I may not be aware of, that you would like to use more?"
On page 31 six career experiences are enumerated - which of these have been a part of your journey so far they recommend thinking about:
* GROW HERE ~ enrichment
* TRY BEFORE YOU BUY ~ exploratory
* SIDEWAYS TO HIGHWAYS ~ lateral moves
* STEP BACK FOR A REASON OR A SEASON ~ realignment
* WHEN UP IS THE WAY ~ vertical career move
* IS THAT GRASS REALLY GREENER ~ relocation
I thought that the questions suggested for information interviews were helpful: What do you need to know to hit the ground running in this role? What are the top five must-have skills for success? What does the future look like for your work? For the area? What best prepared you for this role?
This book is short, and distills a lot of wisdom and perspective in 116 pages. It's a good catalyst for thought for someone who is currently unhappy in their career, but doesn't know where to turn. This books offers ideas on possible directions. It may be a five-star read for someone who is looking for an impetus to make some exploratory steps in different directions.
The advice was pretty common sense, with lots of word in bolds, diagrams, and an overall feel of a workshop pamphlet or a class textbook. The font was rather big, and the material was very digestible. I think the issues that many are having isn't necessarily knowing the options, but being able to utilize them, which often depends a lot on the circumstances and people outside of themselves, such as their supervisor, the companies they apply to and their expectations, etc. Most often it's not about what the employee wants, but about what the company wants. I do agree with the authors that the once-prominent ladder leading up is no longer as visible, and the new landscape can quickly turn into one of stagnation. This book is about avoiding stagnation and helping the employee see all their options, but as it is, I think it's rather basic.
