What is business for? Day one of a business course will tell you: it is to maximise shareholder profit. This single idea pervades all our thinking and teaching about business around the world but it is fundamentally wrong, Colin Mayer argues. It has had disastrous and damaging consequences for our economies, environment, politics, and societies. In this urgent call for reform, Prosperity challenges the fundamentals of business thinking. It sets out a comprehensive new agenda for establishing the corporation as a unique and powerful force for promoting economic and social wellbeing in its fullest sense - for customers and communities, today and in the future. First Professor and former Dean of the Saïd Business School in Oxford, Mayer is a leading figure in the global discussion about the purpose and role of the corporation. In Prosperity, he presents a radical and carefully considered prescription for corporations, their ownership, governance, finance, and regulation. Drawing together insights from business, law, economics, science, philosophy, and history, he shows how the corporation can realize its full potential to contribute to economic and social wellbeing of the many, not just the few. Prosperity tells us not only how to create and run successful businesses but also how policy can get us there and fix our broken system.

A positive step forward!
Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2020Verified Purchase
Colin Mayer has done an extraordinary job of taking the conversation about the future of capitalism and the corporation a step further in a healthy direction. This is not a screed of rage. It is a detailed analysis of the state of affairs, and an outline of the structural changes to consider in order to broaden the benefit of capitalism and thus make it relevant for the long term. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

Why Prosperity requires multi-capital Purpose
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 28, 2019Verified Purchase
Mayer argues clearly and convincingly why profit maximisation is a simply inadequate aim. It ignores impacts on natural, human and social capitals, all of which are at risk from mono capitalism.
Mayer points out that the power of collective endeavours allows greater integrity than any individual. The age of transparency demands this.
“Purpose” is fast becoming the objective of enlightened businesses and countries alike. And responsible Purpose requires sustainable environmental and social norms as well as sufficient economic impacts. This means multi capitalism.
Although current accounting practices fail to measure many of these impacts at all, thriving businesses (& nations) will find ways of measuring their progression towards Purpose.
