胡杨集团(Populus Group/PG)联合创始人兼首席执行官鲍比·赫雷拉(Bobby Herrera)认为,人生故事塑造了人和人的世界观,每个人的故事里都包含了他们曾经克服过的困难。赫雷拉发现,正是因为他曾经直面困难,甚至与其为友,才得以坐到了他渴望的位置上。赫雷拉出生在一个移民工人家庭,有12个兄弟姐妹,童年生活十分艰苦。小时候的他常在凌晨五点便起床,干完农活之后才去上学,因此参军之后的基本训练对他而言并不算难。

赫雷拉从其他领导者身上也看到了类似的成长轨迹,他们都是被逆境点燃了雄心。但领导者通常都不太喜欢分享自己的成功故事。然而,如果对曾经遇到过的困难保持沉默,你与员工之间便容易产生隔阂。反之,你将更容易与他们打成一片,让他们更认同你的目标并为之努力。员工知道你的故事吗?这些故事是否成就了你的选择?你是否愿意鼓励团队成员分享决定他们人生的故事?

胡杨集团经历了十几年的业务增长,随后业务开始变得冷清。赫雷拉查看了企业的各项绩效指标,却还是做找不到原因。于是他请来企业外部的咨询师,后者给出了非常宝贵的意见。咨询师察觉到了内部会议时的压力,认为该公司的团队并没有实现良好合作。团队成员有不接电话和不按要求办事的现象。
