The European Union’s recession has marred its economic, social and environmental leadership. Years of high unemployment, crushing debt and growing social inequality have made the region less desirable for investment and development. EU officials are attempting to address these issues through a series of policy initiatives. The European Commission (EC) suggests doubling the financial capacity of the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI) so it can invest €500 billion [$570 billion] by 2020.
