Communications consultant Bart Egnal writes engagingly about the role that inspiring communication plays in leadership. Drawing upon his experience teaching senior executives to speak effectively, he shows how the terminology you use helps or hinders you as a leader. Many executives find jargon irksome, but continue to use it. Egnal explores why this is so; he explains how to wield jargon as an effective tool and when not to use it at all. He tracks jargon on a spectrum from “useful” to “damaging” while discussing surefire methods for exploiting it effectively. He also discusses ways to harness your use of language to reach your audience, large or small. getAbstract recommends his insightful manual to leaders, managers and public speakers.

In this summary, you will learn

  • How the use of jargon can boost or impede leadership,
  • How to use or avoid six types of jargon and
  • How to use the “language of leadership” and the “leaders’ mind-set” to communicate, persuade and lead.

#30DaysOfSummaries The analysis of Jargon is helpful, and I'm sure many people will benefit from understanding it.

#30DaysofSummaries It's almost so easy to take for granted what we say, without knowing the impact it could have, and what it could really sound and mean to the person listening to it. Sincerity, Passionate, and Clarity resonate with me. Being sincere and passionate go hand in hand in my view it can be seen and people will respect you for it. And when you are clear people know what you are about, what they can expect, and what action is expected of them as well. Very useful summary.

I found this a useful and straightforward summary. Being passionate, truthful and aiming the presentation at the audience is important and shows respect. people know when a presenter has prepared and is genuine; they appreciate the time taken to prepare a good speech that sticks to an agenda and doesn;t waffle all over the place

I am a great supporter of polish, elegance and finesse in one's communication, and subscribe to every word of this summary; although, one must also bear in mind that in the modern corporate world, no good deed goes unpunished. What is to say that repeatedly doing all of the above will not lead one into becoming a corporate donkey?

It is a great article and highlights the importance of communication and the words we used. However, the summary does not give clues about the presence of some examples or tips.

I think the ideas presented in the summary are good. What is perhaps missing to me -is that ,without an example to demonstrate ideas clearly -like calibrate your speech -having an example brings the point clearly. Undoubtedly being a summary ,one cannot go into detail. The risk to keeping it generic is - it becomes subject to interpretation -much like a jargon !

Great article. One cannot emphasize enough the importance of specialized terms and not assuming things mean the same everywhere.
