When Vincent Han sought an app to help him with his weight loss goals, he found most of the popular apps on the market lacking. They looked good, but people didn’t stick with them for very long. What kind of app would grab hold of users, and continue to keep their attention for a long time? That question led Han to reflect on which kinds of phone notifications he paid attention to.

For Han, the answer was personal text messages – the kind you get from friends, family, peers and colleagues. Chatbots weren’t in widespread use at the time, but Han wondered whether he might be able to create a chatbot with an automated personality that would keep users engaged.

Much of behavior change is emotional, so reaching users on an emotional level can help them stick to their goals.
