When Chinese leader Xi Jinping began positioning himself as a champion of globalization, many Western observers didn’t know what to make of it. How can a country that restricts foreign investment and access to information at home be a reliable advocate for free trade abroad? Chinese domestic and foreign policy expert Elizabeth C. Economy's simple answer is: It can’t. She explains how and why Xi has expanded China’s global influence and suggests ways in which the United States can counter China’s plan to spread its illiberal values worldwide. getAbstract recommends her succinct overview to anyone on the fence about China's growing influence in the world.

In this summary, you will learn

  • How Xi Jinping's policy initiatives have reshaped China domestically and internationally;
  • Why China's actions don't always match its rhetoric; and
  • How the United States should respond to China's expanding influence.

About the Author

Elizabeth C. Economy is director for Asia Studies at the US think tank Council on Foreign Relations and author of The Third Revolution: Xi Jinping and the New Chinese State.

Under its leader Xi Jinping, the Chinese government has expanded its influence over the nation’s economy, elevating the role of state-owned companies and taking stakes in private enterprises to increase its oversight over management decisions. It has also tightened Internet censorship and started to develop surveillance technology that would allow Beijing even more control over citizen behavior. While many of these policies face domestic opposition in academic, political and business circles, recent events – such as the vote to eliminate presidential term limits – indicate Xi’s “new revolution” remains strong.
