Recommendation

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual survey measures the quality of life in major cities around the world. The 2018 edition found that, on the whole, security was on the upswing, lifting the suitability scores of a majority of the 140 urban centers analyzed. And perhaps not surprisingly, the most agreeable locations are not always in the largest metropolises. getAbstract recommends this informative overview to expatriates, tourists, business travelers and corporate human resources managers.

In this summary, you will learn

  • What cities rank at the top and bottom based on their livability,
  • What factors go into the index that measures urban living conditions and
  • What aspects most affect a city’s livability score.

Summary

In a close race to the top, Vienna has edged out Melbourne as the number one livable location in the world. The Australian city is now second, ceding the top spot it had held since 2010. Osaka ranks third, followed by Calgary, Sydney and Vancouver. Toronto and Tokyo share seventh place, and Copenhagen and Adelaide rank ninth and tenth. The least livable of the 140 cities surveyed is Damascus, though its conditions have not deteriorated since the prior year’s study. Importantly, convergence is taking place over time, with the developing world steadily closing livability gaps with the developed countries.
