Experts often cite glitchy software as the prime suspect in such incidents as air-traffic system outages and stock market crashes. Complex modern systems – urban infrastructures, website databases, supply chains, and more – have multiple potential “failure modes.” Their complexity often outstrips their own designers’ abilities to understand them completely. Vast, deeply embedded interconnection has given rise to so much overcomplication that the complexity of technology has reached a tipping point.
