President Donald Trump can be characterized as impulsive, capricious, unstable, unhinged – all that and more, according to the mental health experts and other writers who contributed to this collective psychoanalysis of the current US president. In this compilation, edited by Bandy X. Lee, assistant clinical professor of law and psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, the 27 contributors pull no punches when describing the psychological shortcomings they perceive. Trump, they concur, is a narcissist, a sociopath, a bully and an inveterate liar. The writers acknowledge that they can’t properly diagnose Trump: They haven’t conducted formal examinations or obtained his permission to offer opinions on his mental health. However, Trump’s public pronouncements – including his speeches to supporters and his agitated tweets – provide a rich trove of material for taking a psychological measure of the man. 

About the Author

Bandy X. Lee, MD, is assistant clinical professor of law and psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. She was chief resident at Massachusetts General, a research fellow at Harvard Medical School and a fellow of the National Institute of Mental Health. She leads a violence prevention collaborators group for the World Health Organization and wrote the textbook Violence.


These collected diagnoses are compellingly argued, although Trump’s supporters may see this collection as just too much liberal drivel. However, many of the experts who contributed to it are professionals from institutions such as Harvard, Yale and Johns Hopkins. Tony Schwartz, the hired writer on Trump’s The Art of the Deal, also weighs in. These writers persuasively posit that Trump’s behavior and crude grasp of reality pose a grave danger.
