The Internet, mobile technology and the shrinking costs they’ve spawned have been altering businesses and economies since the 1990s, but, to date, few have measured their economic impact. One analysis estimates that, for 13 developed and developing economies, the Internet accounted for 3.4% of GDP and for 20% of growth between 2004 and 2009. Another study figures that the Internet will be responsible for roughly 8% of the output from the world’s 20 major economies by 2016.
