Educational entrepreneur Fred Swaniker had a tumultuous upbringing. Born in Ghana, a coup d’état forced him, at age 4, and his family to flee. The Swanikers move to the Gambia, where, alas, a military coup unfolded just six months later. The family then settled in Botswana, a stable African nation with strong institutions and good infrastructure. Botswana borders South Africa, which, at that time, was still struggling under apartheid, with Nelson Mandela bravely leading the resistance. Swaniker attended high school in Zimbabwe, a thriving nation that seemed to provide “a model for economic development in Africa.” But a few short years later, Zimbabwe lay in tatters due to the actions of President Robert Mugabe.
