Recommendation

Did you know that cardiovascular disease kills more women than men? The medical community has been developing therapies to combat male-pattern heart disease for 50 years. Alas, research and treatment for women lags decades behind. Dr. Noel Bairey Merz candidly explains the reasons for this disparity and discusses the changes afoot. getAbstract recommends her illuminating, impassioned lecture to cardiologists and to all at-risk women.

About the Speaker

Noel Bairey Merz, MD, is the director of the Women’s Heart Center at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute.

Summary

The primary cause of death among women is cardiovascular disease. In fact, more women succumb to heart disease than to breast cancer. The campaign against breast cancer has efficiently raised money for research, prevention and education. Women in the public eye such as Betty Ford and Nancy Reagan identified publicly as breast cancer survivors, and most people know someone who has battled the disease. Yet few people know of a woman with heart disease because heart disease in a woman often goes undiagnosed until she dies of a sudden cardiac arrest with no time for interventions or good-byes.
