At her first job out of college, management professor Christine Porath experienced a lot of rudeness and disrespectful behavior. She subsequently quit and went back to school to study how incivility impacts job performance. Her research found that rudeness at the workplace prompted 66% of respondents to disengage at work, 80% to fret about incivility in the office and 12% to quit their job. Based on these results, tech conglomerate Cisco Systems calculated that incivility was costing the company at least $12 million a year.
