Make It So

by Patricia Sanders

For centuries, people have attempted to shape reality through focused intention, with uneven results. In this science-meets-spirituality guide, neurologist James R. Doty argues that manifesting really works — but has more to do with brain wiring than wishful thinking.

The notion of manifesting — that it’s possible to “will” desires into existence — goes back millennia. It gained popularity in 2006 with the publication of Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret, but the concept traces its roots to sacred Hindu scriptures, Egyptian theology, and ancient Greek philosophy.

At its worst, manifesting can drift into magical thinking: the idea that thoughts alone, perhaps reinforced by visualization or affirmations, can bend the universe to your will. People have been trying this for thousands of years, with mixed results.
