“High-impact entrepreneurs” make their mark through job creation, innovative ideas and other benchmarks of success. They share unique characteristics. To better understand this group, Ernst & Young surveys hundreds of entrepreneurs for its Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) contest. The firm’s review of its 2013 finalists investigated “how high-growth companies exploit opportunities and overcome both business and economic challenges.” In 2012 and 2013, the participating companies created 1/20th of US jobs and boosted their corporate revenues by 30% annually – impressive accomplishments given the sluggish pace of economic growth.

The value of high-impact entrepreneurs – some 30% of the more than 600 companies that participated in the survey – goes beyond traditional metrics to include innovation, job creation, wealth creation and benefits to society. “Mature” entrepreneurial firms’ sophisticated infrastructure and financial muscle contribute significantly to generating employment and prosperity.
