Recommendation

If you listen to the hype, AI is poised to vastly improve many aspects of human life, including healthcare and education, and to free people from a host of mundane tasks. But can the tech really deliver on these promises? In this entertaining read, award-winning tech journalist Joanna Stern sets out to answer that question as she recounts her experience of embedding AI into nearly every aspect of her life in 2025. Her funny yet pragmatic report, which includes interviews with those leading the AI charge, offers powerful insights into the tradeoffs involved in fully embracing an AI-driven future.

Summary

Tech CEOs have made sweeping promises about AI’s potential. The reality is more nuanced.

In 2025, award-winning tech journalist Joanna Stern conducted an in-depth experiment with herself as the test subject: With the exception of writing her book (although she does include some AI-generated text in clearly marked sections), Stern spent an entire year allowing AI to take a leading role in her life, using it to handle daily chores, manage her health care, drive her family around, and more. Stern undertook this experiment because she wanted to know what it might be like to live in the future that AI company leaders like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg were promising people, one in which the tech became “better than us humans at almost everything” and, thus, transformed and improved all aspects of life.

Of course, not everyone is optimistic about a world run by AI. As Max Tegmark, a physicist and AI researcher at MIT, quipped to Stern, “You better hope your book is out before humans lose control of the planet.” So, what is humanity really facing with AI: Utopia? Apocolypse...
