Shareholder returns are no longer enough to satisfy the growing cohort of clients who seek purpose behind their profits. Social and environmental considerations are gaining weight among corporate and individual investors. KPMG’s Tania Carnegie provides a convincing, albeit introductory, argument for impact investing.

When KPMG’s Tania Carnegie visited rural Kenya in 2005, she marveled that even in the face of hardship, the locals sought opportunities for a better life. They didn’t want direct aid but a chance to set up microbusinesses and to become consumers. This experience prompted Carnegie to develop the community leader strategy at KPMG in 2009.
