by David Meyer

Anthony McCarten explores how Susie Buffet and Melinda Gates influenced their husbands to expand philanthropy on an historic scale.

First came Microsoft

Anthony McCarten – the author of Darkest Hour: How Churchill Brought England Back from the Brink and the screenplays Darkest Hour, The Theory of Everything, and The Two Popes – engagingly explores the relationship between Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, who became friends in 1991. He shows how their friendship drove the growth of history’s largest philanthropic organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which now has almost $70 billion in assets.

Both Warren and Bill owed some measure of their success to Harvard. Bill, because he got in and then quit. Warren because he hadn’t gotten in in the first place.Anthony McCarten

As a teenager, Gates attended Seattle’s private Lakeside School, where he met Paul Allen. Gates went on to Harvard, but both he and Allen dropped out of college after two years. Together, they co-founded Microsoft in 1975. By the mid-1990s, some 90% of all personal computers were running its Windows operating system.
