Recommendation

This presentation is fast, peppy and to the point. Entrepreneur Derek Sivers drives his points home with catchy words and vivid visuals. His message – that sharing your intention to reach a goal reduces your chances of success – runs contrary to many self-help books and goal-setting plans. Though Sivers merely sketches his support for this contrarian stance, his clear points should help viewers rethink their approach to attaining their goals. getAbstract recommends Sivers’s brief TED Talk to anyone about to embark on a journey toward a new goal.

In this summary, you will learn

  • Why you shouldn’t divulge your personal goals, and
  • Why individuals who withhold their goals are more likely to attain them.

About the Speaker

Derek Sivers founded CD Baby, an online independent music retailer, and MuckWork, a company that assists musicians by tending to their “uncreative dirty work.”

Summary

Try this thought experiment: Envisage your most ambitious goal – that is, the achievement you most want to earn. Now imagine receiving all the praise that would arise from that victory. Perceive the positive sensation that springs forth. If you stated your intention aloud, your goal probably seems more...

Interesting read. This goes against "conventional wisdom" on the subject. However, there are multiple studies that support Sivers' assertions. Great food for thought.
