Summary

Aerospace engineer Danielle Wood discovered her calling at 17 years of age, as a NASA intern. That summer, Wood saw the Columbia space shuttle launch, carrying into space the Chandra X-Ray Observatory for the study of black holes. A year later, on her summer break from MIT, Wood discovered an additional calling: teaching English, math and science to young Kenyan girls. Wood’s dual missions dovetailed when a mentor at NASA explained that nations like Kenya had been applying space technology for decades to improve their citizens’ lives and communities. Wood had found her niche – the intersection between space exploration and earthly development for underserved populations.
