Recommendation

According to systems biologist Uri Alon, science perpetuates a faulty linearity between inquiry and discovery. In reality, many scientists become mired in “the cloud” that lies between the known and the unknown. Alon merges science and improvisational theater in an effort to improve the scientific process. Although his solution may be an acquired taste, getAbstract recommends Alon’s novel mental schema to researchers, educators and students of science who have experienced or currently face the despair and self-doubt that often precede scientific breakthroughs.

In this summary, you will learn

  • How science could benefit from improvisational theater techniques,
  • How staid scientific paradigms mislead researchers,
  • What it means to be in “the cloud” and
  • Why supporting this stage of the scientific process is critical for innovation.

Summary

The road to scientific discovery is largely misunderstood. Many people perceive the process as “a series of logical steps between question and answer.” But the route is rarely so simple; experiments often don’t work out, leading researchers to become perturbed. Improvisational theater can teach struggling...
