The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented economic shocks around the world.

Efforts to control the COVID-19 pandemic have taken an extraordinary economic toll. In “the Great Lockdown,” businesses stopped producing and consumers reined in their spending. The financial shocks swiftly changed companies’ and individuals’ economic standing. In January 2020, the International Monetary Fund projected that 160 countries would show growth in per capita income. Yet by May 2020, 170 countries were experiencing negative per capita growth – an outcome economists call “the Great Reversal.”

To manage through such uncertainty, the IMF has had to integrate epidemiologists’ projections into its usual macroeconomic modeling. More than 90 nations have requested assistance from the IMF, which, by May 2020...
