Devastating weather events are becoming more frequent. The military calls climate change a “threat multiplier” that will cause unrest and insecurity globally. Communities must take a proactive approach to preparing for three categories of climate-related risk:

  1. “Violent storms and floods” – New Orleans rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina using techniques to mitigate storm surges and flooding. Katrina destroyed sections of the I-10 Twin Span Bridge, so the town made the new bridge 21 feet higher to avoid future flooding.
