Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans have written a clever, candid, thorough guidebook for managers who would like to keep good people in their employ. With no filler, and plenty of insightful stories, this well-organized book is divided into 26 chapters - each one named for a strategy that begins with a sequential letter of the alphabet. Illustrated with color graphics that carry the eye to sidebars and other informative tidbits, the book offers advice ranging from professional to personal. It makes plenty of sense. getabstract.com recommends this book to anyone who manages or supervises employees, and for employees themselves.

About the Authors

Beverly Kaye  also the author of Up Is Not the Only Way is the president of Career Systems International, a publisher of career development tools, and of Beverly Kaye and Associates Inc., a consulting and training company. She holds a doctorate from UCLA and lives in Sherman Oaks, California. Sharon Jordan-Evans is the president of the Jordan Evans Group, a leadership consulting business which focuses on executive coaching, team building, and succession planning. She holds a master’s degree in organizational development and lives in Woodland Hills, California.

Why Good Employees Stay

Many managers and supervisors think that good people stay in particular jobs because of money, perks, or benefits - areas that are out of most managers’ control. But that is not true. Good people stay in jobs because of the way their managers treat them. They remain because of circumstances that are, for the most part, within the control of their managers. They stay because their managers treat them with respect and warmth, give them interesting and challenging work, afford them some flexibility, and make them feel valued. Don’t guess what will keep your employees happy - ask them. Show them you care about them and their particular needs. Notice them, listen to them, and thank them. In essence, "love them or lose them."

Keep your employees on a consistent path of growth. Help them discover and overcome any barriers they encounter. Help them build alliances they might need to meet their goals. Do not ignore their ambitions, or they will leave.
