Elon Musk is boring; that is, The Boring Company (TBC) that he founded is designing a tunnel system under Los Angeles to alleviate traffic congestion. Cars would enter and exit the tunnels via elevators and travel on “skates” at speeds of up to 200 km [130 miles] per hour. The number of potential tunnels is limitless, as “the deepest mines are much deeper than the tallest buildings are tall.” Tunnel construction currently costs about $1 billion per mile, but by shrinking the diameter of tunnels and raising the power and efficiency of the tunneling machines, Musk can significantly reduce that cost.
