Recommendation

Marketing blogger and author Seth Godin urges embracing and leveraging the explosion of “tribes” in the Internet age. These communities form around a shared idea or passion and can effect remarkable change, he explains. In typical Godin fashion, the talk combines humor, storytelling, hyperbole and some well-placed arguments to build a case for a new marketing approach. getAbstract suggests this popular lecture for industry insight and inspiration.

About the Speaker

Seth Godin is a marketing blogger and the best-selling author of Tribe, Permission Marketing and Purple Cow. He founded the Internet company Squidoo in 2005.

Summary

The San Francisco SPCA [Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals] once euthanized four million cats and dogs a year. Then Nathan Winograd joined the organization, bringing a revolutionary idea: “Make San Francisco a no-kill city.” Other SPCA chapters and humane shelters countrywide lobbied against him. But Winograd persevered. He appealed to the community and found many people who shared his passion for saving animals. Together, they made San Francisco the nation’s first no-kill city – operating entirely through community support and without running a deficit. Winograd had leveraged the power of a “tribe.”
