Patients tend to blindly accept their doctors’ advice. But what if your specialist could earn supplementary income, depending on your diagnosis? And what if your physician didn’t share your values? Wouldn’t these factors affect your treatment? In an attempt to raise consumer awareness, Dr. Leana Wen launched the Who’s My Doctor campaign to encourage transparency among physicians. getAbstract recommends Wen’s innovative solution and powerful oration to medical personnel and anyone who believes in restoring trust between doctors and patients.

About the Speaker

Leana Wen is a public health advocate who campaigns for transparency among physicians.

When Mrs. Wen, the mother of American physician Dr. Leana Wen, received a diagnosis of stage IV breast cancer, she underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. One day, in the middle of her treatment, Mrs. Wen searched online for her oncologist’s phone number and was horrified to learn that her doctor was a paid spokesperson for the drug regimen he was administering to Mrs. Wen. Maybe these drugs were her best option, but perhaps the oncologist had a major conflict of interest. Mrs. Wen lost all trust in her doctor, “and when that trust is gone, then all that’s left is fear.”
