In fact, drift has left many workers with the menial task of refining and quality-checking AI’s outputs, allowing machines to drain all judgment, satisfaction, and meaning from human work. Drift can seem like the safer option at first blush, but the alternative, “design,” is the only form of sustainable progress.

For author and AI adviser Rahim Hirji, combating drift is a family tradition. Four successive generations of Hirjis faced various forms of drift, and each responded by climbing a subsequent rung on the “SuperSkills ladder”:

  1. “Survival skills” — Hirji’s great-grandparents shunned the drift of hunger when they left India for East Africa, choosing to design their own future.
  2. “Street skills” — Hirji’s grandfather rejected the drift of surrender when he resisted soldiers’ demands for bribes. Instead, he charmed the soldiers with his wit and hospitality.
