On February 4, 2007, tight end Ben Utecht was about to run onto the football field to play in Super Bowl 41 for the Indianapolis Colts. He was focused on the biggest game of his life. As he began to run, he heard someone calling his name over and over. Though he always managed to ignore shouts from fans when he was focused on a big game, this time he turned toward the voice. He saw his father leaning over the railing of the stands and beckoning to him.

Utecht didn’t dare lose his focus on the game. He waved to his dad and kept running. But an inner voice urged him, “Go back. Go back to your father. Go back to where it all began.”

Seized by sudden awareness of what really matters in life, Utecht pivoted and ran to his father. He thanked his dad for the love and faith he’d always provided. Utecht’s father lived by a heartfelt religious creed – a set of beliefs that guided his life and shaped how he’d raised his son. About the Author

Ben Utecht, who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Colts, is also the author of Counting the Days While My Mind Slips Away: A Story of Perseverance and Hope (2017). With the Colts from 2004 to 2007 and the Cincinnati Bengals in 2008, he suffered five concussions and became an advocate for concussion education and brain health. Now a speaker, executive, and business and leadership consultant, he’s the former Chief Culture Officer at True North Private Equity and the founder and former CEO of SoleCareRx.
