Summary

Technology is revolutionizing how people work and creating a plethora of new possibilities. For example, “digital nomads” can now travel the world while holding down jobs. They can work from anywhere that has a Wi-Fi connection. By 2035, there may be as many as one billion “location-independent workers” making a living around the world. However, these workers often face strict red tape and visa regulations. Because they generally enter countries on tourist visas, they must relocate frequently. Savvy nations are updating their regulations to attract these workers. Estonia is issuing a visa to allow foreign workers to reside there for up to one year. Moreover, technological progress enables an estimated 70% of the world’s professional workers to do a fraction of their work remotely, a trend that has led one company, Roam, to offer blended work and living spaces in a “professional commune.” This concept may seem unconventional today, but with 2.3 million people around the world already working in co-working environments, this trend is likely to grow.
